The Community of Har Bracha
The town of Har Bracha is a vibrant, growing religious community located on Mount Gerizim in the biblical heartland of Samaria. Mentioned in the Book of Deuteronomy—“When God your Lord brings you to the land which you are about to occupy, you must declare the blessing on Mount Gerizim…” (Deuteronomy 11:29)—the community is a realization of this ancient promise.
Today, Har Bracha is home to hundreds of families. Drawn by a deep love for the land and a desire to remain connected to the Beit Midrash, many rabbis, avreichim (married students), and Yeshiva alumni choose to establish their permanent homes and raise their families here. The community is a diverse mix of Torah educators, engineers, professionals, and public activists who share a unified vision.
A Brief History
The community originally began as a military outpost. In 1982 (5743), the decision was made to convert it into a civilian community. Unlike other settlements that were founded by established core groups, Har Bracha struggled initially, and by 1986, only three families remained. Shortly after, a dedicated group of families from Machon Meir arrived to help revitalize the town. The true turning point occurred in 1992 (5753) with the establishment of the Hesder Yeshiva of Har Bracha. Since then, the community has experienced constant, flourishing growth.
Torah Life and Education
At the center of the town’s spiritual and daily life is Yeshiva Har Bracha. The community is deeply rooted in Torah study, offering numerous weekly classes, including Daf Yomi and halakha, which are open to the public. Women in the community enjoy regular weekly classes and nightly chavrusa (partner) learning. The Rabbi of Har Bracha, Rabbi Eliezer Melamed, shlita, is deeply involved in the daily life of the community, maintaining an open door for anyone seeking guidance.
Har Bracha is blessed with over a thousand children and boasts a robust educational infrastructure. This includes a large daycare center, multiple kindergartens, and dedicated local elementary and high schools for both boys and girls. The youth receive special attention, with adult counselors running dedicated activities and providing individual care for older children and teens.
Community Life and Amenities
The demographic of Har Bracha is primarily composed of young families in their twenties and thirties, alongside older founding families who are now raising their third generation on the mountain. The atmosphere is defined by warmth, mutual responsibility, and caring—from organizing meals for new mothers to assisting families in times of need.
The town provides all necessary modern amenities, including:
A large library
A Leumit health clinic and a Tipat Chalav (family health center)
A fully stocked grocery store, a pizzeria, and local shops for clothing and household goods.
As the community expands, it has developed additional neighborhoods, including the “Western Hilltop” and the “Ronen Hilltop,” accommodating the continuous influx of new residents with both mobile homes and permanent housing projects, such as the Tzurim neighborhood.
Employment and Agriculture
Residents of Har Bracha work in a wide variety of fields. Many are employed locally in education, while others commute to the Tel Aviv center for business and tech opportunities, or pursue degrees at nearby Ariel University.
The high altitude and crisp mountain air make Har Bracha an ideal location for agriculture, particularly vineyards. The local “Har Bracha Winery” produces prestigious, award-winning wines that are celebrated globally. The area also features orchards, flower hothouses for export, and beautiful local landmarks, including the “Mitzpe Yosef” outlook (overlooking Joseph’s Tomb and the city of Shechem) and a natural mountain spring that serves as a local mikveh.
Settling the Land
Building a life in Har Bracha is more than just choosing a place to live – it is the active fulfillment of the mitzvah of settling the Land of Israel in its most enhanced form (b’hiddur rav). By living on the front lines of the settlement movement, the residents of Har Bracha solidify the Jewish presence in the heart of the country, contributing directly to the security, strength, and resilience of the entire State of Israel.
